Editorial

Dear Readers,

"Where is the wisdom we have lost in knowledge? Where is the knowledge we have lost in information?". The above saying of T. S. Eliot is relevant for all of us to attain excellence in our respective organisations. The paper on Organisational learning, knowledge and wisdom deals in details with the subject. B. Purushothama highlights the five golden questions as self assessment tools to attain the excellence. Prof. Kirankumar Momaya from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi highlights the opportunities for improvement for Indian business to learn from the Japanese counterparts and finally a study by an international team of leading experts reports that the organisational excellence strategies leads to improved financial performance. We wish to give a new shape to our e-journal and need help from you to improve the outlook of Quality Update as well as new inputs for it. You may send your contributions by e-mail to me at  balvir@bhelhwr.co.in.

-: SYNOPSIS OF THE CONTENTS :-

Organizational learning, knowledge and wisdom

Cooperation for Competitiveness

To improve our understanding of the impact of organizational learning and knowledge on competitive advantage, the paper proposes a framework that includes the constructs of data, information, knowledge, and wisdom. Each of these constructs is then associated with a different type of learning. Authors argue that wisdom is an important, albeit missing, construct in the knowledge-based theory of the firm. A key to organizational wisdom is judgment and decision making, which requires an understanding of the complexity of a situation, but also requires the ability to make sense and simplify so that action can be taken. Three important drivers for the development of organizational wisdom are experience, a passion to learn, and spirituality. Processes for acquiring organizational wisdom such as transformational leadership, organizational culture and knowledge transfer are also discussed in this paper.

The paper by Prof. Kirankumar Momaya from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi explores the several opportunities between India and Japan to enhance the cooperation. Though India has marginally improved its competitiveness over the years, the author highlights gaps in Indian businesses' ability to scale up competitiveness in relation to Japan.

FIVE GOLDEN QUESTIONS – A Self Assessment Tool

Organisational Excellence Strategies & Improved Financial Performance

We are all engaged in number of activities with an intention to achieve our objectives and to sustain them. We desire to be successful and work hard for the same. How can we say that we are performing well? B. Purushothama highlights the five golden questions namely, Whether we have a procedure; How do we ensure it as the best;  How are we implementing it; Did we get the results as anticipated; and finally How do we compare with our competitors. The author argues that if we are clear about the activity and the results, we can emerge as Winners.

The paper highlights the findings of the study conducted by an international team of leading academics from the Centre of Quality Excellence, The University of Leicester, UK, Linkoping University, Sweden and Georgia Institute of Technology, US. Research jointly sponsored by the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) and the British Quality Foundation (BQF) provides independent objective evidence that the effective implementation of the principles of the EFQM Excellence Model impacts bottom-line business results.
